THE ABBEY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY & ST NORBERT.
SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME. W/E. 13/14 FEB. 2010.
DAY OF PRAYER FOR TEMPERANCE.
TODAY AS WE GATHER AS A COMMUNITY OF GOD’S PEOPLE AROUND THE TABLE OF THE LORD, WE PLACE OUR TRUST IN THE LORD WHO LEADS US AND GUIDES US. TODAY IS ALSO THE DAY OF PRAYER FOR TEMPERANCE; WE REMEMBER THOSE SUFFERING FROM ALL KINDS OF ADDICTIONS, ESPECIALLY THOSE ADDICTED TO ALCOHOL AND DRUGS.
ASH WEDNESDAY- FEB. 17TH Marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. Our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and remind us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told “Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return”. Ashes are a symbol made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The Ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine Mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK:
Q. After the recent news about sinful priests, how can I be sure that I was properly baptised, confirmed or absolved?, Is that priest at the altar on Sunday a sinner?
A. The validity of the sacraments does not depend on the spiritual state of the priest or bishop as the grace of any sacrament comes from the compassion and power of Jesus Christ, who is the Head of his Body, the
Church. The fact is that no priest is totally free from sin. That was the unique privilege of Mary, ‘our tainted nature’s solitary boast’ (Tennyson). Fr. Silvester O’Flynn OFM
